Surviving DBT

Am I A Better Person?

I am well in to my course of DBT and the jury is still out on whether it has benefitted me or not.

I like my therapist but I struggle with the confinements of the groups and individual sessions. I keep going off topic and get drawn back and, sometimes I find the strict format like an emotional cage.

DBT therapists use change techniques to encourage you to change your
behaviour and learn more effective ways of dealing with your distress.
They encourage you to replace behaviours that are harmful to you with
behaviours that can help you move forward with your life. For example,
you can learn to start challenging your unhelpful thoughts and develop a
more balanced way of looking at things.

I find that the Interpersonal Effectiveness skills have helped me navigate my relationship with my husband a little more skillfully. We argue a little less and calm down quicker when we do.
