Care in the Community
The Community Mental Health Framework for Adults and Older Adults: The new Community Mental Health Framework describes how the Long Term Plan’s vision for a place-based community mental health model can be realised, and how community services should modernise to offer whole-person, whole-population health approaches, aligned with the new Primary Care Networks. New models and four-week waiting times are being tested in 12 local areas in 2019/20 and 2020/21 supported by specific new funding, with all parts of England receiving new funding for community mental health over the five-year period, reaching almost £1billion per year extra by 2023/24.
Personally I am 65 years old and this year I have had to go to A and E in an ambulance 5 times and required urgent care each time due to self injury or self neglect. I have required 2 periods of in-patient care of more than 7 days and 3 overnight stays.
This is more than the total of the previous 10 years when I had a community mental health nurse to support me. I now do not know where to go or who to contact when in crisis so by the time my husband calls someone I am always in need of emerancy assistance. I do not believe this is good for me or a sensible use of A and E’s services.
while referrals are rising, the number of people receiving mental health treatment remains lower than pre-pandemic levels.
Over the same time period, our analysis found the number of people in contact with the service had dropped by around 67,000 – a fall of 9%.
