Bad, Mad or Sad?

“I myself suffer from PTSD and anxiety – which is more physical than mental. I don’t worry or anything like that, but feel the anxiety’s physical effects often. And also, I feel a lot of ANGER.

If anxious, depressed and bipolar people feel just as bad as BPDs (or worse), and can have impulsivity issues as well, then how come these people aren’t as aggressive as BPDs? And despite having terrible ruminations, I don’t see people in the depressive and anxious spectrums being so vindictive. BPDs on the other hand, seem to be on a quest to project their personal, emotional and material pain and failures, and they have a strong need for revenge.”

I read this on a discussion site for people with mental illness. Boy this woman is really angry! As a sufferer of BPD with many friends with various different mental illness diagnosis’, I have found that we share many things in common and prejudice is one of them but for the BPD sufferer it seems to be worse than for other illnesses. There also seems to be a lot of confusion as to what BPD actually is even among those with experience of people with BPD. We are not psychopaths and do have empathy for others. Nor are we any more violent toward others than non-BPD’s. We do not have narcissistic personality disorder, they are completely different things and we are far more often the victims of abuse than the abuser. In fact 95% of sufferers experienced abuse during childhood.

Therefore this woman is not only misinformed, she is a major part of the problem facing BPD sufferers today and I know for a fact that I would make a supreme effort to be far more sympathetic toward her and her difficulties should we meet than she has been toward people like me.
